Fact Book

About the Fact Book

The Capital University Fact Book is provided to the campus community by the Office of Institutional Research (OIR). The Fact Book serves as a resource for institutional data as of the current fall semester. In most instances, data are presented historically allowing the reader to see trends.

Visual Fact Book

The Capital University Visual Fact Book (VFB) is provided to the campus community by the Office of Institutional Research (OIR). The VFB is intended to be used as a companion to Capital’s annual Fact Book, not as a replacement. The visualizations, or vizzes, presented in the VFB are representations of tables and charts that are found in the Fact Book, but in many instances, the data presented are richer and more robust because of the interactive capabilities of Tableau Public. Data trends and patterns can be seen much more easily and in ways that are different from the static tables and charts found in the Fact Book. As a way to enhance the VFB experience for viewers, the OIR is offering the following Tableau Tips. Viewers are strongly encouraged to keep these tips in mind when exploring the VFB.

The visualizations currently available in the Visual Fact Book are listed below. Please be aware that some visualizations have several dashboards included in them. You will see these individual dashboards listed underneath the title of the visualizations. They are not linked individually, but they are all accessible by clicking on the title of the “main” visualization. Each of the individual dashboards has its own tab in the visualization.

Please feel free to contact Larry Hunter in the Office of Institutional Research if you have any questions about Tableau or the information contained in the visualizations.

Interactive Visual Fact Book

Tableau Tips

  • Visualizations are much more effective when viewed in “full screen” mode. To view in full screen, find the icon in the bottom right hand corner of the visualization and click on it. Toggling on this icon enables the viewer to switch back and forth between normal screen and full screen.
  • The filters located on the right hand side of every visualization are the key to getting the most benefit from the VFB. Viewers can see data presented in many different ways simply by clicking on a combination of filters. This is how trends and patterns are able to become so readily apparent.
  • If a viewer has filtered the visualization but wants to return the viz to its original state, there is a reset icon located in the bottom right hand corner next to the full screen icon. Clicking on this will restore the viz and allow the viewer to begin filtering again if that is the desire.
  • Sometimes, there is more information contained in a viz than what is first seen. Rolling over the viz with the computer mouse will allow viewers to see that “hidden” information very easily. This is a very important and useful feature.
  • Some visualizations in the VFB are presented as maps. Viewers can, once again, use the computer mouse to roll over the maps and see more information. Viewers can also drag the map by holding the Control key while holding down the left-hand button on the mouse and scrolling. These are also other features that are accessible when rolling over to the left hand side of the map and seeing the icons appear.
